Dental Health Care Made Easy

By:

Ideally, good dental health care begins as soon as you have teeth. Of course, if you are reading this article, you have well passed that initial stage. But, not to worry, good dental hygiene can start as early as right now. At best you would brush, floss and rinse three times a day or at worst once daily. Your dental supplies are few and not very expensive. The recommended items are toothpaste, toothbrush, dental floss and mouthwash. As simple as this list is, each item does need a little understanding as to its personal benefit for you - the user.

The function of toothpaste is to clean your teeth, help prevent enamel decay and fight tartar and plaque buildup. For individuals with sensitive teeth or gums, both problems caused by enamel erosion and exposed dentin, the use of toothpaste for sensitive teeth is recommended. Additionally, toothpastes are available in various flavors and strengths for specific target areas such as stain removal, whitening power, breathe enhancement, etc.

Both manual and electrical toothbrushes, like toothpastes, come in various styles aimed at specific oral conditions. Manual brushes are available in child and adult sizes with soft, medium or hard bristles as well as the brush portion set at different angles to better serve your individual mouth. Electric brushes have high powered bristles that are able to loosen and remove more plaque in areas that are hard to reach for manual brushes. Your dentist can help you in your selection.

Dental floss helps you to maintain healthy gums, reduce bacteria and remove particles that get stuck between teeth. Flossing is a component of the total tooth brushing experience. Besides flossing with each brushing, you can use dental floss after every meal to ensure no food remains lodged between your teeth. Floss can be waxed or unwaxed, a simple thread or multi-functional thread with one stiff part for getting between your teeth, one part cushioned for getting into wider areas and one part simple thread for getting into tight spaces.

Mouthwash is another multi-functional product. There are rinses for just about every mouth condition. There are rinses for pre brushing to assist in loosening plaque and eliminating bacteria, for post brushing to assist in maintaining the benefits of the toothpaste used, for breath freshening, for dry mouth or excessive saliva, etc.

The reward for your efforts comes during your six month dental checkup when no new tooth or gum issues are found and any previous issues are improving or resolved.
