Dental Fear and Tips on Dealing with it

Do you have a fear of dentistry? Does just the thought of having your teeth scraped send chills up and down your spine and cause you to break out in a cold sweat? Would you rather give birth then have a cavity filled? If these things are true for you it is certain that you are living in your own personal hell.

Does it help to know that you are not alone in your fear? The unfortunate reality is that most people really are afraid to go to the dentist. The key difference here is the degree of fear that people experience either prior to their dental appointment, or in the waiting room, or in the dentist's chair. Some degree of fear is to be expected. The problem arises when the fear is excessive.

A very important tip for you is to remember that much fear is caused by the unknown and uncertainty. Quite often whether we are talking about dentistry or the Internal Revenue Service or just buying a used car it is almost always true that the more knowledge we have about our situation the easier it is for us to view it rationally instead of primarily emotionally. It would be a wise move for you to read a lot about dentistry and even ask questions of your friends so that you become more knowledgeable about dentistry.

Also, try one more time to deal with your fear logically. I know that many people are so frightened of the dentist that they can't think logically about it to give it just one more try and maybe you will be one of the 10% of people who actually are helped by thinking about their fear of dentistry logically. If nothing else just consider the consequences of not going to the dentist wanted a regular basis or if you are going to want a regular basis but now are hiding from work that you need then consider the consequences of not having that work done. Remember that sooner or later you will have to go to the dentist for work. If you do it now it is all in your terms in stead of doing it for emergency pain relief.

You should also call with your dentist and ask for an appointment to just come in and sit down with him for a 15 or 30 minutes and just get to know him or her as a person. Talk to them about your fears and how they make you feel. Frequently just establishing a more personal relationship with your dentist accomplishes a tremendous amount in minimizing your fear.

Along with these other tips you might also consider asking a friend or family member to go along with you to your dentist appointment. This is really not all that unusual of an occurrence. Some people even mask it by just asking a friend for a ride to the dentist office just to have company in general. What they are sometimes trying to do is ensure that there will be someone that they know and trust that they can leave at one to worrying there are stressful visit to the dentist office. In some cases the dentist will even allow your friend to come in the back with you while he examines your mouth and works one your teeth. This obviously can be a big plus for you and helping to control your fear of dentistry.

The most important things that you can do is to use one or all of these tips or rack your brain to come up with some additional ways to deal with your fear of dentistry. The most important thing to do is simply to do something. Do not just run from your fear of dentistry but instead attack it as you would any other problem in your life. If you try to ignore it will not go away but if you realize that all you have to do to improve your quality of life is to learn to control your fear so that you are in charge you will be much better off. You have heard this before in other circumstances and it is true of again here that you need to just do something. Anything. Just do something not to make your fear go all the way but just to learn how to manage it.

Remember that what we are talking about is you improving your overall quality of life. It is not necessary for you to defeat fear entirely it is only necessary that you learn to manage or control your fear once you do this and start going to the dentist on a regular basis and taking care of all of your needed dental work your quality of life will improve dramatically.
