Dental Caries And Oral Hygiene

The development of caries is very common especially among children and young adults. Caries can cause serious health problems; it may even cause the loss of the affected tooth. When caries has been developed it is best to visit a dentist to treat the infected area, remove the decayed part of the tooth and place a dental filling to protect the tooth from further damage. If the caries is left untreated it might cause serious damages to your overall health. The major cause of caries development is plaque and the bacteria that are in it.

After meals, there is a high level of bacteria in our mouth that sticks on the surface of the teeth and eventually causes tooth decay. These bacteria produce acids from the leftover food in our mouths, this acid can cause decay of the tooth surface and allow the bacteria to enter further inside the tooth structure and form caries. Sugar is especially dangerous, because it allows bacteria to produce more acids than any other food. The most important factor in the fight with the development of caries is, to reduce the levels of bacteria and plaque, and the best way to do so is to maintain proper oral hygiene. When you enter a pharmacy, you can see various products that are designed to prevent the formation of caries, however using such products from time to time will not provide you with proper protection against the development of caries.

The most effective way to prevent the development of caries is to make a plan about your oral care and hygiene and follow it regularly every day. Brushing your teeth is of course the most essential part of the proper oral hygiene. Regular brushing removes the plaque from the surface of the teeth and prevents plaque buildup, buy this brushing significantly reduces the chance of caries formation. The choice of toothbrush and toothpaste is an important part of proper brushing. When you are choosing a toothbrush you should look for one that is not too soft, a soft brush might not provide the perfect results you seek when you are trying to avoid caries, a brush with a medium or even firm surface will provide better results. The toothpaste you use should have some fluoride in it, fluoride will harden and strengthen the surface of the teeth structure and it will provide optimal protection against caries development. Brushing alone is effective, but when you combine it with regular flossing, the results will be a lot better. Flossing removes all of the leftover food particles that the toothbrush couldnt reach, so flossing is also advisable for proper oral hygiene. After brushing and flossing, the final step is to add a good mouth rinse to your oral hygiene program; the mouth rinse will contribute to the fight with the bacteria and the strengthening of the teeth structure.

Following these steps every day will improve your oral hygiene and reduce the chance of caries formation significantly.
