Dental Anxiety

Dental Anxiety

By:

There is no need to be so fearful of dentistry these days. The time has gone when it is an unpleasant experience. It is now accepted that modern day dentistry is painless with the aid of local anaesthesia patients are very accepting of treatment.

However, if someone is anxious then we can offer alternatives.

The easiest is to offer a Relative Analgesia in addition to local anaesthesia. This is a totally safe and reversible mode of treatment. The patient has a nasal mask on during the whole procedure. This administers an adjustable mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. These are the gases used in child birth. The patient will feel totally relaxed with a floaty sensation and totally accepting of the treatment. There are no after effects such as post operative nausea and the patient can return to work immediately. The procedure is completely safe, the oxygen levels never dropping below 50% and overall it is a very pleasant experience which is very popular with the patients. An alternative to relative analgesia is intravenous sedation. Nowadays, this is more commonly undertaken at the dental practice together with an anaesthetist. The technique involves using sedative drugs administered intravenously. The procedure is useful if deep sedation is preferred and or the treatment is prolonged. At no time will the patient lose consciousness or become anaesthetised. The patients are continually monitored by the anaesthetist and almost always report the treatment as being quite pleasant.

With close liaison the dentist and the anaesthetist in terms of how the treatment is progressing time -wise then there can be little post-operative recovery time. The patient will need an escort to accompany them home and they should rest for the remainder of that day.

As this type of treatment is not an anaesthetic the patients will also have local anaesthesia.

Other treatments available range from simply providing the patients with DVD goggles which will enable them to watch a film of their choosing. Possibly considering treatment under hypnosis if the patient is a good subject this can work very well, yet other alternatives include Acupuncture for anxiety and pain control, oral sedation is an option in some situations the patients can be pre-medicated with a sedative, this can work well but if this is done before leaving home it goes without saying that an escort will be necessary both before and after the treatment, and provisions would have to be made to rest for the remainder or the day.

As yet another alternative treatment can be undertaken under general anaesthesia, legally this can only be considered in a hospital environment and some dentists can offer this obviously this is only suggested in situations where none of the above are appropriate. This is more often used in oral surgical procedure or where a lot of treatment is indicated. It will involve a period of recovery in the hospital usually on an out-patient day care basis

As can be seen there are many ways to overcome this not uncommon situation the choice will be dependant on the patients level of anxiety the nature and overall anticipated length of the procedure to be undertaken.
