Denims New Rules Of Style

Denims New Rules Of Style

By:

Jeans and denim jackets always seem to conjure images of cowboys and starving artists instead of high-end men's fashion. Nowadays, though, the realm of the denim-decked and the stylish man are mutually exclusive no more. Done with the right pieces, the new denim can easily go from grungy to elegant in just a few strokes. Its time to discover this new side of denim and elevate your wardrobe to a whole other level of style.

Beyond Simple Shirts and Ties
Chambray can be considered the gentler sibling of the rough and tumble jeans with its softer, smoother texture. It's long been used as a material for shirts that were meant to be casual and used nowhere near the office. A new generation of tastemakers, though, is using chambray in completely new ways, with and as a necktie, for starters.

Give the humble chambray button-down shirt a much-needed style upgrade by pairing it with a necktie. Yes, you read that right; a chambray shirt can mix with something that's as formal as a tie. Keep the shirt neutral, something like a gray or an extremely light blue will do fine, and the necktie classic but interesting, a navy piece, even one in a knit, so that you don't challenge too many fashion institutions at once.

On the flipside, some retailers are beginning to use chambray for ties as well, and guys are finding them very, very wearable. Knot up a chambray necktie over a typical office shirt (or anything not too formal, really). Make sure you observe all the rules of matching neckties and shirts, though, in particular the one that says never to wear a chambray tie over a chambray shirt. Ever.

Denim + Structure = Style
Unless you were at the Country Music Awards, jean jackets used to border on a fashion faux pas waiting to happen. With the right color and just enough structure, though, you could end up with a piece you wouldn't mind getting caught by the paparazzi wearing.

Look for the darkest possible shade of denim available, which is usually anywhere from a bold navy to a deep midnight blue. At the same time, ask for something that's as rigidly structured as the typical blazer with its sleek lines, defined shoulders and no sagging at any point. You may have to go to a tailor, however, as most men's apparel retailers are yet to stock up on this particularly fashion-forward style of jacket.

Don the denim jacket over a severe outfit, preferably one that sticks to a palette of black and gray. And see to it that your pants are pepper gray or inky black cotton; wearing jeans with the jacket is simply too much denim.

Back to Black
While it's true that the washed out, light blue and sandblasted jeans are the antithesis of all things formal (and many things stylish), this doesn't have to be the case for all of denim-dom. As mens fashion pundits are finding out, switching over to black, the age-old formal attire standby, can give denim a leg-up in the formality stakes as well.

Find yourself black denim, whether it's on a pair of slim cut pants, a bomber jacket or a well-structured bag. As long as the color is consistently black and there's a minimum of fading or white flecking, you can pull off a much more sophisticated look while wearing much more denim than was previously allowed. You will want to take extra care, though; the added formality ends once the fading of the color on the fabric begins.

This season, denim is proving itself once again to be one of the premier materials when it comes to sheer versatility of style. Whether you're looking for something that's decent enough for the office (but maybe not so much for presentations with the boss) or an outfit that's sufficiently sharp for a night on the town, denim is still one of the best go-to fabrics around.
