Delray Nissan Dealership Excited About Charging Stations

By:

In a move that has the potential to change the face of driving in a major way, Nissan delivered the first all-electric LEAF last December. This had me and everyone at the local Delray Nissan dealership very excited! However, as great as the idea of an all-electric vehicle is, we still have a long way to go when it comes to the infrastructure to support this type of driving. After all, an all-electric vehicle is a far cry from the West Palm Beach used car options were all used to! Fortunately, Nissan has already begun taking steps to make sure were prepared for the nationwide release.
One of the major steps being taken is the construction on a 30-car solar charging station outside of the future Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in Tennessee. The solar charging port is expected to be completed in July and once completed, it will use renewable energy to charge the Nissan LEAF vehicles that will be produced there in 2012. (Right now, the LEAF vehicles and batteries are being produced in Japan.)
In total, Nissan plans to install 30 stations, which marks the latest in Nissan's statewide initiative in Tennessee, a state with special significance for the brand. Carlos Tavares, chairman for Nissan Americas, said the following: Tennessee is Nissans home in the Americas region. These solar-assisted charging stations demonstrate our dedication to a zero-emissions society, and our dedication to bringing innovation to our home in Tennessee. Nissan in the coming year will expand our manufacturing presence, enhance our philanthropic efforts and make new additions to our headquarters operations, all in Tennessee.
When these new solar car ports aren't being used to recharge the LEAFs, they will be able to fulfill other roles as well. In fact, their solar energy will help to actually power Nissan's manufacturing facilities. The U.S. Department of Energy is working with Nissan and is funding the stations with a matching grant. Nissan is also working with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Tennessee Valley Authority; Nissan will provide them with share usage and technical data from the solar chargers for further research.
With the installation of these new charging stations, Nissan is illustrating the reduced impact on the electrical grid through the use of solar power and energy storage. These stations use the same lithium-ion battery that powers the Nissan LEAF and will allow the automaker to analyze the battery's storage capacity as well demonstrate the other applications for their battery technology other than automotive applications.
Stay tuned for more details on the all-electric LEAF and the solar charging stations that will help power them. We have a lot to look forward to from the local Delray Nissan dealership and I cant wait to see what the future holds. For those traditional drivers out there, dont worry because youll still be able to get the West Palm Beach used car models youre used to! In addition to these models though, we are sure to see even more environmentally friendly options coming soon!
