A magical gem along the pacific coast, Del Mar is a wonderful oceanfront community to visit or live.

With two miles of coastline, warm temperate days, blue skies, and clear ocean water, Del Mars numerous and beautiful beaches are an ideal destination for any age during any season. Del Mar was mentioned in TIME magazine's "100 Greatest Beaches in the World," with Del Mars 15th Street Beach ranking in the top 10, at 4th greatest beach in the world.

In the late 1800s, a new route on the Southern California railroad gave life to the city of Del Mar. Theodore Loop, who built the railroad, liked the area so much that he told people he had found the most attractive place on the entire coast.

Loop met a rancher from New Mexico named Jacob Taylor who purchased 338 acres of real estate and set about creating a resort town for the rich and famous, which Loops wife named Del Mar, from the famous poem The Fight of Paseo Del Mar. Taylor initially built 40 small houses and listed the homes for sale. He then built a two story Victorian schoolhouse, an observation tower, a train depot and a water system. Del Mar became a popular California vacation destination.

The world-class hotel, the Stratford Inn was built in the Del Mar village in 1909, and it quickly became the desired destination for Hollywoods silent film stars. Del Mar experienced tremendous growth in the 20s and 30s, and the Stratford square was built across from the hotel to service the growing population. Built in the English tudor style, it remains an icon and treasure of Del Mar.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds were built in 1936, and has been the permanent home to the San Diego County Fair ever since. A year after the Fair opened the mile-long oval thoroughbred racetrack was completed. Opening day of the track, July 3, 1937 began a new era in Del Mar. The track, which was founded by Bing Crosby and Pat OBrien, was hailed as Bing's Baby or Movieland's Own Track. Crosby himself coined the famous lyrics, which live on today, "Where the surf meets the turf, down in old Del Mar ".

Del mar, now a lush vibrant community with approximately 4,500 residents, is San Diegos smallest municipality. Located 20 miles north of San Diego, Del Mar is bordered by Torrey Pines State Reserve on the south, and the San Dieguito river on the north.

Built family by family, and with one tenth of neighbor La Jollas population, Del Mar is Southern Californias most tightly-knit community. Del Mar is the only beach town in California that has not had its authenticity spoiled by developers. Del Mars residents over the decades have worked to preserve the village, restricting development and focusing on open spaces and wildlife preservation. Thanks to the efforts of an active group called the Friends of Del Mar, there will never be high-rise apartment buildings or billboards in the City.

Del Mar is the first town referenced in the Beach Boys hit "Surfin USA." The song mentions, "Youd catch em surfin at Del Mar."
