Dehradun is the capital city of Uttarakhand (earlier known as Uttaranchal), one of the newest states of India. It is at the base of the Shivalik (Lower Himalayas) Range of Mountains in Northern India, approximately 230 Kilometers from New Delhi, the Capital of India.
The District of Dehradun, of which Dehradun city is the head quarters, is bound on the east by the River Ganga (Ganges) and on the west by Yamuna, two of Indias largest rivers in the North. The City is one of Indias wealthiest in terms of per capita income. It is also the gateway to one of Indias most frequented hill stations, Mussourie, around 36 Kilometers into the mountains.
Dehradun is home to some of the premier boarding schools of India. There are over 300 High Schools in the City and its vicinity! The reputed schools of Dehradun attract students from all over India, making Dehradun a young and diversified city. The Doon School is a reputed school and students come here from all parts of the country and abroad. Dehradun is also home to some of Indias defense establishments and training centers. A significant number of Army Officers are commissioned from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.
Over the last ten years, Dehradun has seen a lot of industrialization around it. The State of Uttarakhand has been heavily promoting Industrial and IT investment by giving Tax Sops and Holidays. Otherwise Uttarakhand relies heavily on tourism, including Hindu religious tourism.
The climate of Dehradun is sub tropical. It is heavily influenced by the Mountains. It is quite cold in the winters, hot in summer and crisp in spring. Dehradun is also popular for Basamati Rice and lychee fruit.
For those who are fond of adventure, there is good news. The quaint town forms an entry point for trekkers and mountaineers onto their journey into the Garhwal Himalayas. Dehradun is also the gateway to the popular hill station of Mussorie and religious places like Rishikesh and Haridwar.
There are quite a few interesting spots to visit in Dehradun which include the Robbers Cave, the Tapkeshwar temple, the Sahastradhara etc. The Robbers Cave makes for an excellent picnic spot and the locales around are so delightful that one must take a bus to the nearby spot and then ride a bicycle or walk to the spot. The Sahastradhara is famous for the sulphur springs which are long known to heal certain skin diseases. The Tapkeshwar Temple is so called because it is the temple of Lord Shiva or the God of Tap or Tapasya. The surroundings here are extremely serene and a river runs just next to the temple. While here, one may also check out the Forest Research Institute or the FRI, one of the best institutes in the world today. The Botanical Garden set amidst the property is worth checking out too. Other spots which tourists may want to check out include the Sai Darbar Temple, the Mindrolling Monastery, the Kalinga War Memorial, the Gurkha Fort etc.
