Metabolism refers to the intake of food versus the energy or work produced by that intake. For us, everyday, it's our ability to utilize the foods we eat to their fullest extent. You will get lower amounts of energy from each calorie eaten, if you have a lower metabolism. Increased metabolism leads to better health.

Those that consume calories rapidly. (have high metabolisms) are typically fit whereas those who do not are larger. We all use calories at different rates, since our metabolisms are as unique as we are. It is essential to understand and accommodate these individualities in our metabolic rates so that these can be controlled and make them work for us.

Your vitamin and nutritional needs, your thyroidal and endocrinal production, and how well the processes of your body work together all determine your metabolic rate. People have spent numerous years trying to find a magical pill that will raise that rate. Through exercise, diet, and willpower you can control your metobolic rate.

Our base metabolic rate is determined mostly by genetics. We inherit our metabolic tendencies from our parents, along with our body frames and functions. This base rate can be raised or lowered through diet and exercise, though, and is not fixed in place.

If you want a significant, long-term improvement in heightened metabolic rates and loss of fat, exercising for tone and muscle mass is the answer. The more muscle mass we have, the more calories required to maintain it, thus the more energy we burnmeaning we have a higher metabolic rate.

Our nutritional habits also determine our metabolism and are key to guiding it towards the higher goal. Foods rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients necessary to make our bodies more efficient with practice, we will have less fat in the body and increase our metabolism
