Defining Skateboard Tricks

Skateboarding tricks require a special blend of balance and athletic ability. Not only that, but it takes a great deal of courage to pull off many of these tricks. One wrong move and you could be getting acquainted with the local emergency room nurses. So is there any doubt why professional skateboarders are practically worshipped in the skating community?

Many skateboarders love to practice the new tricks they see on TV and at their local skate parks. There really is nothing quite like the rush of landing the perfect trick that you have been working on for weeks. If you are new to the sport and aren't quite sure what the difference is between an ollie and a grind, here is a simple guide to help you out.

Aerials require the skater to basically float through the air while attempting to hold the board to his/her feet. These tricks can require flips and rotations and can be done on vert ramps, swimming pools, etc. A popular aerial is called the nollie 180. This is when the skater rotates 180 degrees in the air and lands on his or her feet facing the opposite direction they went up.

Freestyle tricks are when a skater balances on one or two wheels, on an edge of the board, or even on the nose of the board. Basically, this is done on the ground and skaters create their own tricks and signature moves to wow other skaters.

Slides and grinds are when the board or truck is sliding on a ledge or rail. When the board is on the ledge/rail it is called a slide. When the truck is on the ledge/rail it is known as a grind. You will find skaters of all skills sliding and grinding on handrails, steps, benches and anything else they can think of!

There are so many tricks one can do, that it goes beyond the scope of this article. However, the ones mentioned above will give you a great head start into learning the skating culture and the basic moves and tricks that go along with it.Once you can pull off any of these moves, you will not only impress yourself, but other skaters as well. Once you learn how to do the easy ones, don't be afraid to move on to the more advanced tricks and work on your skills even further. Remember, the best skaters have no fear which is what makes them so good.
