Defining Allergic Tics

By:

Involuntary, inappropriate movements or vocalizations can be defined as allergic tics when they are associated with an external stimuli/allergen. External factors that are identified as allergens can result in a myriad number of adverse reactions in individuals with allergies.

It has been said that one fifth of all US citizens have allergic cases of one kind or another. And because motor tics categorized as allergic tics make up a large part of allergic reactions it only follows that the instance of allergic tics is also rising in America.

Allergic tics are frequently attached to the uncontrollable and rythmic spasmodic motion of muscles and/or groups of muscles in the face or facial area. It can be anything from slight twitching to a rythmic and frequently unconscious jerk.

The categorization of a tic as an allergic tic requires the presence of an allergic trigger. Triggers can be identified by an allergist with experience in testing. The specialiazed training of an allergist enables them to offer the answers, diagnosis, and treatment management that can maximize allergy relief available from treatment.

The most effective identification methods employed by allergists are skin scratch and blood tests. They identify allergens quite accurately. This enables allergic patients to avoid the allergens in the future. It's the one sure fire way to eliminte the symptoms/allergic tics.

In cases where avoidance is not an option, working with an allergist is just as vital. Some airborne allergic triggers (and other kinds of allergic triggers) can't be avoided on a regular basis. In this case an experienced allergist can offer the best possible chance for relief of the symptoms and the allergic conditions.

In many cases allergic tics are found in combination with other symptoms like Tourette's Syndrome. The tics are a frequent and often identifying characteristic of the syndrome. The condition itself doesn't need to be allergy related for the tics associated with it to be allergen triggered.

In some patients proper treatment for allergy tics can drastically decrease overall symptoms of the non-allergy related condition drastically. This is due to the fact that the percentage of motor tics related to the conditoin that are actually allergy tics can be significant.
