Defense Contracts And Uid Compliance

What is UID Compliance?
The Department of Defense (DoD) has a set of standards in place regarding the specific requirements for the marking, identification, and tracking of any property for which the military is responsible, including any item which they manufacture, store or issue. UID stands for "Unique Identification". UID Compliance means that any item which will be made for, used by or placed under the control of the DoD needs to follow these guidelines.

What are the markings requirements?
All markings must be placed on an identification tag or plate, which is made of metal or plastic and firmly adhered to the item. The IUID (Item Unique Identification) also may be placed directly onto the item, so long as the marking will still meet the other requirements for UID compliance. For instance, the UID mark must be written in one of the required fonts, in at least the minimum size and in a place that is visible while the item is in use. In cases where the item is too small to contain the UID in the minimum font, it may be possible to place the mark on the package containing the item to remain in UID compliance. Markings should be Machine Readable Information (MRI), with exceptions.

What is the MIL-STD-130N?
The official document containing these regulations for UID compliance is called the MIL-STD-130N. These guidelines were developed in part by Jet City Laser, in association with the DoD. The MIL-STD-130N references other documents, but where there may exist conflict between any referenced source and the MIL-STD-130N, the MIL-STD-130N standards bear presumptive weight over any other rules or regulations, with regard to UID compliance. Some items are excluded from MIL-STD-130N, including cell phones and other items which already bear a UID of some kind. For additional information on UID compliance, please visit Jet City Laser.
