Dedicated Hosting: Server Management Options To Consider

By:

Something that is interesting about the dedicated hosting industry is that there has yet to be any industry standards set. The role of management is not yet clearly defined in any way, shape or form. This can be a problem only because each and every individual company is left to determine their own standards. Those who do not realize this may think they are getting several things that they, in fact, are not. Keep reading to learn some of the server management options that should be considered before making a decision.

First, there is a question about who will manage all of the updates on the server. Some companies may expect their clients to handle those themselves. Still others may choose to include that as a service they provide. Updates can be important and there are many that need to be managed. For instance, application updates, operating system updates and antivirus updates are all important and should be managed by a professional on a regular basis.

Second, there is the question of monitoring the many areas that need monitoring. The most obvious is server monitoring. This is usually covered by the dedicated server hosting company. SNMP hardware monitoring and application monitoring are both important, too. Someone needs to be able to monitor these areas. Regardless of who ends up doing it, the details should be hashed out ahead of time.

Another set of options to consider would include the various types of management and technical abilities that would be needed. For instance, who will deal with the software installation and configuration? Who will provide programming consulting? Who will provide technical support? Often, companies do not have technicians in-house to deal with these issues. Since that's the case, it's a good idea to find out who can do that when and if the time comes.

User management, performance tuning, database administration, backups and recovery should not be overlooked, either. Each of these can be very time consuming, not to mention technical. Only professionals should be entrusted with this duty. If the dedicated hosting company takes responsibility for these ongoing issues, they will most likely end up taking good care of their clients. If they expect their clients to be able to deal with these problems on their own, their clients will most likely not end up happy. Those who watch for these server management options are those who will make an educated decision on their dedicated hosting.
