There aren't many people out there who haven't been to a home that has that perfect room. The lights are just right, the furniture is placed in all the right places and looks like it came from a decorating magazine, and don't even start about the paint or flooring. On the other side most people have also visited homes that just scream for a little style and taste to help out that all important living room. When it comes to either, one of the things that helps or hurts the room and therefore the home is the decorative lighting or lack thereof.

When in a room of either quality take some time to look at the lighting it has. Most likely that extremely well done room is going to have quality fixtures or lamps that are there as decorative lighting. Maybe they're helping to showcase a really fine display of china, or a collection of mugs or dolls. Maybe they are turned to highlight a beautiful picture of the family. Either way it's safe to say the lighting in this stylish room is done with an intent in mind. On the other side of the story take a look at the room, or remember it, that was less than desirable in design.

Most likely this poorly done room utterly lacked any type of decorative lighting. It's sad how often people try to get away with that twenty year old dome light in the center of the living room and wonder why it never seems to look any better than it did the day they moved in. Paint and flooring can be changed, but if some attention isn't paid to the type of lighting in any part of the house, the rest of the changes won't go far to create the look that is trying to be achieved.

Decorative lighting comes in all sorts of types, styles, shapes and tones. This is important because that means it can fit into anyone's sense of style or budget, and into any room in the home. Consider which area will be made over, and think about what the overall affect is hoped for. The first place to work with this is in the lighting. Don't even think about new furniture or pictures if there's not a decent, well-crafted lighting scheme going on, the money and time will just be wasted.

When it comes to these choices, look at the lamps out there, whether it's something that will be placed on a floor or an end table. There are heaps of possibilities here that can start a room in a whole new decorative direction. Maybe a quality ceiling fan is what has been in mind. These are perfect because they can serve two uses: moving air and reducing the utility bills, and providing great lighting for a room. When it comes to lamps the more creative the better, they can be moved if a new style is called upon later down the road. When it comes to fixtures, bear in mind they will be in place longer. Either way, by all means have some fun with it.
