Decorating Your Home On A Budget

By:

Your home is supposed to be your safe haven, and you want to feel comfortable when you're in it. Aside from the obvious safety and security reasons, one way that you can make home feel like home is by giving it a touch of your personal style. Decorating and re-decorating your home every now and then keeps you from becoming bored and stimulates your mind, body, and even spirit.

And the best part about re-decorating is that it won't cost you a whole lot of money if you know what to look for and where to look for them.

Before diving right into the water, make a plan first. Without a well-thought out plan, you might change your mind and change courses several times. This will take more time and will be more costly because you will most likely be making repeat visits to the same stores because you forgot to buy a particular item to match the decor. Jot down all of your ideas, consider each one carefully, and then go from there. You may even want to consider buying a home architect or home designer software program that will allow you to sketch out your room virtually and play with the colors.

Do you want to give your home a new coat of paint? Working with different colors can really set the tone. Bolder colors will help brighten a room while neutral shades will give it a more homey feel. The great thing about painting is that it can really change the atmosphere even if you don't change anything else in the rooms, such as your furniture or decorations. For paint, visit your hardware store and pick up a couple of brushes and rollers. Visiting the paint section and browsing through the brochures and color guides while you are in your planning phase can also help you decide which colors to go with.

For decorations, who says you need fancy crystal chandeliers and classic antiques that will run your wallet deep? If you are going for a more vintage feel, visit a thrift store for some great finds on antiques that will cost much less than what you would pay for at specialty stores. Even stores like Pottery Barn and Crate And Barrel, which carry mid-priced items, will have great deals on some of their vintage pieces every now and then.

A great resource to check often is Craig's List. It's true what they say: one person's trash is another person's treasure. Great finds from personal sellers and great deals from retailers are waiting to be discovered. For furniture, visit wholesale liquidators rather than the big name stores. These types of businesses can often eliminate the middle-man fees by buying directly from the manufacturer.
