Decorating With Real Fur Adds A Touch Of Luxury To Your Home Or Resort

By:

In spite of all the hot debate surrounding its use, absolutely nothing is comparable to the luxurious look and feel of genuine fur. For many people of a certain wealth and stature, a little touch of real fur, in the form of accents such as fur comforters and fur throws, adds an undeniable element of luxury opulence to their homes and vacation destinations. Also, there are many lodges and resort hotels that embellish with real fur accessories to provide that exotic touch to the atmosphere. A sensible item too, fur is much more long lasting and warm than most other fabrics and cloths, and contributes that feel of lavishness to even the humblest of sportsman's cabins and lodges.

There's no question that fur provides an especially nice decorative touch to vacation properties such as mountain and ski houses and rustic cabins, as it contributes such a lot to the rough-hewn feel and ambiance of these peaceful getaways. From smaller components such as throw pillows or area rugs, to large luxurious fur bedspreads, real fur items just seem to feel right at home in these more outdoorsy locations. After all, hunting and trapping are a major and undeniable part of the U.S. historical past in its early wilder days, and it was our trapper-forbears who were the first to explore, open up, and settle the lands that U.S. citizens and residents now call home.

Some of the most frequently used types of hides that are used for fur accessories these days are taken from coyote, beavers, and rabbits, often in the wild. Whenever possible, many of these animals are taken out of significantly overpopulated ecosystems, and/or they are removed from situations where they are proven predators or pests and thus causing economic hardships and livestock losses to neighborhood ranchers and farmers.

Some very nice furs accessories are also made from farm raised animal pelts, such as mink and fox. Because of high demands from animal-rights organizations, captive-raised animals are generally being treated more humanely than in the past.

It is interesting to note that sheep and cowhides are also used to produce some rather nice items that are carried in major department stores, and have been for years, but that this practice has seldom if ever been questioned in any serious way. Faux fur, while endorsed by many as the humane substitute to real fur, has significant issues too. It is essentially acrylic, which requires petroleum during the production; it is not as warm; it has a significantly shorter life span, and is essentially non-biodegradable. In addition, far more faux fur products are necessary because of the short life span, which means that these products will eventually end up in land-fills in huge quantities.

Though fur provides an unquestionably warm and luxurious touch to any home, the cost, taking into consideration its lifespan, is often not much more than other high-end comforters and bedspreads - just one more great reason to outfit your home with real fur items.
