Clutter has a way of sneaking up on you. It accumulates a little bit each day and before you know it, your house is a mess. Once it's messy, it takes a lot of effort to get things neat and orderly once again. It's better to have a plan in place to keep the clutter from building up in the first place. Nobody like to clean house, but a few simple practices put into place each day can keep your home in good enough shape to welcome drop-in guests. Here are a few tips to help you declutter room and closet areas, and keep them neat on an ongoing basis.

Spend 15 Minutes Decluttering Each Day

It isn't too hard to find 15 minutes in your day to devote to maintaining a clean home. A good time to do it is right before bed as long as you don't wait until you get too tired to do anything. Set a timer for 15 minutes and keep moving until time is up. Make a sweep of your den, kitchen, and other rooms, and pick up anything that is out of place. Just drop them into a basket for the time being. If you run out of time before you can empty your basket, just set it aside until morning. At least the clutter is picked up and in once central place so it will be easy to deal with later, just don't let your baskets of clutter sit and accumulate. When you declutter room areas at night, you wake up the next morning to an orderly home and this will make you feel better and help you stay motivated to keep your house tidy.

A Place For Everything And Everything In Its Place

Every time you bring something new into your house, determine where its permanent storage or resting place will be. Then when you use it, always take it back to the same place when finished. This will keep you organized so you always know where everything is. It will also shorten your clean up time because you won't have to stop and wonder where to stash your things; you'll know right away where they go.

In With The New, Out With The Old

You can declutter room closets by making a commitment to get rid of an article of clothing every time you buy something new. That way your closet isn't ever expanding, its contents will stay about the same size even though you frequently update your wardrobe. Closets are particularly prone to clutter, we all hold onto clothes long after we have stopped wearing them. So make the decision to donate an old outfit you no longer wear each time each time you buy a new one.

Periodically Deep Clean

Declutter room and closet contents at least once a year.  You can accumulate an amazing amount of clutter over the period of a year, even when you do frequent house cleaning. If you don't deep clean for five years, or ten, you will be faced with a mountain of clutter to sort through some day. Save yourself that grief by cleaning out your entire house at least yearly so your possessions don't get the chance to take over.

Use Pegboards And Organizers

When you declutter room and closet contents, your home will look neater. When your belongings are organized, you know where everything is. You can go right to it and won't have to be running out to buy another because you can't find something you need. If you are like a lot of us, you probably have multiple hammers, screwdrivers, or can openers because you couldn't find the ones you already had. Keeping your stuff organized is easy today thanks to the many useful organization systems on the market today. These keep all your items separated and visible so you can easily locate what you need.

Donate Frequently

One of the reasons we tend to accumulate so much stuff is because we form sentimental attachments to it. That can make it very hard to throw something away. However, if you donate your stuff, it can be much easier to part with. Just think about how someone else may actually need your items and would benefit from them. That would make your stuff more valuable if it is merely clutter to you now. Plus, the more you give, the more good things come your way. Giving and donating is a win-win situation for everyone.

When you are ready to declutter room and closet areas, be prepared to put in the work needed to get your home in order. You'll have to throw out a lot of stuff and then set up an organizational system for the things you keep. To keep from being overwhelmed, just do one room at a time. Pick an easy room like a half-bath. When you get one room finished, you'll gain confidence and motivation to keep on going until you have tackled the big jobs in the kitchen and garage.
