Students who aspire to a career in the field of radiology technician have many different choices in the types of medicine they work in, and in the parts of the body they work with, and also in the types of equipment they will work with. The job of a technician is not just a cut and dried job with one set of duties and obligations. Within the medical field of radiology there are several different positions to be filled.

Choosing the Job by Body Part

A technician can specialize in the part of the body they want to work with. Some technicians perform examinations of the breast to help people detect and treat breast cancer. These professionals run mammography equipment, and they often run ultrasound equipment in order to help people discover what is lurking inside their breast tissue.

The technician that works with the problems that can occur in the cardiovascular areas of the human body, do imaging test to determine different conditions that affect a person's heart. These technicians find and detect blockages in the arteries, and they find leaking valves, and other signs of serious heart diseases and complications.

There are technicians who work mainly on discovering causes of gastrointestinal disorders. This includes any illnesses that affect the stomach and the colon.

Prenatal ultrasounds are now done by every OB/GYN and the technician that specializes in doing the ultrasound to show the size and health of the unborn fetus often works directly at the OB/GYN office instead of in a hospital. This is an exciting job for many, but beware it can at times be heartbreaking as well.

Choosing by the Equipment Type

There are many different types of equipment that is used to perform imaging tests, and the student who wishes to can pick the type of equipment they most want to operate, and center their educational knowledge on that specific equipment.

Some of the equipment choices include:

*Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
*Fluoroscopy
*Positron Emission Scanners
*Computer Tomography
*Nuclear radiology
*Sonography

There are individuals needed in every related and field, and in some instances the individual will travel from one facility to another performing the different test required. Some hospitals have an employee dedicated to each particular type of machine, and some of them have a generalized employee that performs test using several different types of equipment.

The person that works to become licensed as a radiology technician can truly pick and choose the career path they will follow.
