Your teeth require proper care in order to look their best, but due to many myths, people simply dont know what they should do and what they should not. Learn the truth about tooth care myths.

When someone turns the camera on, do you smile brightly or do you give a little close-lipped smile in order to keep your teeth from appearing in the photo? Our teeth are one of the first things that many people notice about us, so having bright, white teeth is important. Unfortunately most of us have to deal with having teeth that are less beautiful than we could want them to be, and one of the reasons is because there are so many myths surrounding tooth care. These myths tend to confuse people or to blatantly put them off of procedures that could help them to get the type of teeth that they truly wish that they could have.

Brushing

There are many myths circulating about how to brush your teeth. You may hear that it doesnt matter what type of brush you have, and that it does matter what direction you brush your teeth. And you may even hear that flossing isnt necessary at all if youre brushing on a regular basis. However, its important to understand the theory behind each of these ideas.

First, the type of brush. It actually does matter what type of brush youre brushing your teeth with. If you brush your teeth with a hard bristle brush and are doing it wrong, you can cause serious damage to the teeth and the gum, which can equal up to thousands of dollars in dental care in order to fix the problem. Soft bristle brushes are always preferred by dentists. And flossing cleans an area of the teeth that the bristles of a brush simply cant reach.

As for what direction to brush your teeth in, that actually does matter. Dont brush up and down, dont brush left to right, or right to left, but do brush in small circular motions. A sideways or up and down brushing motion can cause the gum to wear away over time, making your teeth look far less beautiful than they could.

And while you wont need to visit the dentist every few months, two visits a year, equally spaced apart, is a vital part of keeping your teeth healthy. If you wait to go to the dentist you could be at risk of having seriously bad teeth, and of having to pay hundreds of dollars to get a large cavity fixed that could have been fixed for under $100 if it had been caught in time.

Teeth Whitening

There are also many myths surrounding teeth whitening, including one myth that once you go to a cosmetic dentist to have tooth bleaching done, youll never have to do it again. While a proper tooth bleaching procedure can make your teeth much whiter for a long time, if you do not take proper care of your teeth after the procedure, and drink dark sodas and eat staining foods, your teeth will stain again, and you may need to have another tooth bleaching procedure done in order to get your teeth back to the brightness that the previous procedures had achieved.

There are many myths surrounding tooth care, but it is important that you learn the myths about tooth care so that you can properly take care of your teeth and can have them looking their best.
