Debunking Hearing Loss Myths Learn More About Hearing Loss And Deafness

By:

There are some myths about hearing loss that exist. Some of these will be debunked in this article.

Myth One: Cleaning Ears With Small Objects

It is a common myth that only fingers or cotton swabs should be used to clean your ears. You should actually not put any object in your ear that is smaller than your elbow. Using small objects to clean your ears can actually cause damage and possible temporary hearing loss.

Myth Two: Ear Pain and Infections

Another common myth is that if ones ear hurts, an infection must be present. This is simply not true. There are many reasons why your ear may hurt that dont include infection. Allergies can cause ear pain as well as what is called swimmers ear. This condition, also called external otitis, occurs when the ear canal becomes and stays wet. This warm, wet and dark environment makes the perfect place for bacteria to live and multiply, which then causes an infection in the ear. Swimmers ear is very common among both children and adults and can be easily treated. This does not mean, however, that an infection is present in the inner ear or that any hearing loss will occur.

Myth Three: Popping Ears

Another myth is that popping your ears is dangerous to them. In truth, doing this is rarely dangerous. Sometimes this even helps you to hear better. One good example of this is when going on an airplane trip. The higher you are, the more blocked your ears will feel and the more trouble you will have hearing. Many people chew gum to help their ears pop in these situations. You can also hold your nose and blow gently to relieve the pressure and cause your ears to pop. Do not, however, blow too hard. If you are having trouble getting your ears to pop, be patient and try again. The popping should eventually occur.
