Dealing With Your Fear Of The Dentist And Complex Dental Procedures Through Sedation Dentistry

By:

Perhaps you have an overwhelming fear of visiting the dentist. Maybe you have a fear of needles, so the thought of a shot to numb your mouth is more daunting than the idea of allowing the dentist to work on your teeth without a pain killer. Or, you might just have a lot of dental work to get completed and you want to get it done in one sitting, no matter how long it takes. In any of these cases, sedation dentistry may be just what you need.

Sedation dentistry, sometimes called sleep dentistry (although you won't really be asleep), is the doctor-administered use of sedatives during dental treatment. The techniques used in sedation dentistry can help calm your fears and relax you for longer procedures. There are three main types of sedation methods available: oral sedation dentistry, IV (or intravenous) sedation dentistry, and inhalation sedation dentistry.

Although IV sedation, when administered by a properly trained professional, is a very safe and effective method of sedation dentistry, for some patients the thought of the needle needed for an IV is worse than the procedure itself. Because of this, many patients choose a needle-free method of sedation dentistry, like oral conscious sedation or inhalation sedation.

Typically, during inhalation sedation, nitrous oxide is administered to the patient through tubing or a mask over the nose.

Oral conscious sedation is currently the most popular form of sedation dentistry in the United States. In this method, the patient is prescribed a medication that is taken orally either before or during the dental visit.

It is important to ensure that the dentist that you choose is properly trained in sedation dentistry treatment. Just because a dentist states he or she offers "anxiety-free dentistry" does not mean that he or she can properly administer sedatives for patients. Check with friends and family, other patients, and various dental associations to make sure your dentist is able to offer you safe and effective sedation dentistry.
