Dealing With Skin Burns And Burn Scars

By:

If you've ever had a skin burn then you know that they can range from minor to severe. If you've suffered from severe burns then you probably have scars that are constrictive, painful and itchy. These scars can also cause the muscle, tissue, and bone loss.

Skin burn treatment may include grafting to replace skin and to accelerate the healing process. Skin grafting requires the harvesting of healthy skin, however, if the person affected by the burn does not have healthy skin, the doctor will rely on skin banks.

How to Treat Skin Burns

First aid treatment for burns is very simple as long as you keep calm. Remember that the appropriate first aid procedure can help minimize burn damage.

First: Lower the Temperate of the Burn

When you suffer a burn, hold the affected area under cool running water for 10 to 15 minutes or until the pain subsides. If the burned area makes this difficult, then immerse the burned area in water. If you prefer, you can also apply cold compresses to cool the area.

Protect the Burned Area

Avoid using any type of fluffy or lint-producing material to cover the wound, instead, protect the affected area with a sterile gauze bandage. Wrap the bandage around the wound loosely to keep it from applying pressure to the skin.

Finally: Control the Pain and Wait for Help

You can use an OTC pain killer to help minimize the pain caused by a burn, however, if the pain is too severe, consult with a doctor about stronger medication.

For third degree burns, you should call for emergency medical assistance immediately. While you are waiting for help to arrive, make sure that you don't remove any burned clothing. Do not immerse the body in cold water because this can cause shock and hypothermia.

If necessary, you should begin CPR on the burn victim. Elevate the burned parts so that they are above heart level. Finally, use a cool, moist, sterile bandage to cover the burn area.

Treating Burn Scars

Once the wound has healed you will have to deal with the burn scars. Fortunately, minor burns don't usually leave behind scar tissue, although there may be some minor darkening that will subside after a while.

Severe burns, on the other hand, will probably lead to considerable scar tissue in which case there are ways of achieving burn scar removal. On such example is the use of laser therapy in the elimination of scar tissue.

In some cases, it will be necessary to resort to skin grafting to replace scar tissue. Another scar removal option is the use of surgical excision without grafting and the application of compression garments.

All of these methods can and should be accompanied by the use of effective scar creams. When choosing the right scar cream you should make sure that it contains special ingredients that can help dissolve damaged tissue and boost the production of collagen. You can also use scar creams to treat minor scars without having to undergo some sort of surgical intervention.
