Dealing With Child Hearing Loss

By:

If the mother had an infection during pregnancy, or there is a family history of hearing loss developed at an early age, your child may be susceptible to this as well. Even older children and college students are subject to hearing loss.

Keep track of the development milestones your child should be reaching for every year. In case he or she is having difficulty achieving these, you may need to get the child checked for hearing loss from a professional.

The first three years of a childs life are important for language development. Hearing loss at this stage can hinder the development of his or her language skills. If you suspect child hearing loss, get him or her diagnosed by a physician at once.

Visit an ear, nose, and throat specialist. A hearing and balance center will have physicians, audiologists to determine the degree of the hearing loss, and instruments. Search for one online, otherwise ask people you know for recommendations.

Central hearing loss involves a processing problem by the brain. In peripheral hearing loss, there is a problem with the structures. Conductive hearing loss happens when there is a blockage in sound transmission from the external or middle ear.

In the first three months of the childs development, he or she should react to noises, and be soothed when the parent speaks. In the next three months, the child should turn to the side from where the noise is coming from. He or she should be able to make sounds.

Babbling should begin in the next six months. Fifteen month olds should be able to point, say dada or mama correctly, and follow one-step orders.

One and a half year olds should be able to use single words. By the time the child is two, strangers should understand some of his or her speech. Three year olds should be able to use three to five word long sentences.

Four year olds should be able to speak in such a manner that strangers are able to comprehend nearly all of their speech. Child hearing loss may be indicated if these milestones are not reached.
