Dart Myths And Regulations

By:

There are many things people don't quite understand about darts: how it became a worthy leisure activity, how to throw the darts, the way scoring works, and even the rules to the traditional game we play in bars.

Darts is a wonderfully delicate game that takes precision and dedication, but when mastered is one of the most rewarding skills known to man.

Darts usually refers to a specific game with set rules, however, in the past darts could refer to any sort of game in which you threw darts at a target. Before it became a game, it was actually used as a weapon used by ancient eastern civilizations (e.g. ninjas).

Presently we have many different types of darts. The most common is just called "darts", and it usually refers to a game where you direct your darts at a circular board fastened to the wall.

These circular boards are cut down the middle ten times to form twenty separate but evenly-sized-pie-piece like portions of the board. Each of these segments holds a number, indicated just outside of the section.

The number is one through twenty and each number is only used once; the exact set up is like so moving clock-wise:20,1,18,4,13,6,10,15,2,17,3,19,7,16,8,11,14,9,12, and 5. The reasons the board is set up like that with the numbers so topsy-turvy: it makes it a little more even so you can just aim for a broad section of the board and expect to hit a few good numbers.

Inside the board there are circular ring sections; the outer ring section is a double point bonus section, the inner ring section is the triple point bonus section. In the center there is a dot out lined by another and the smallest ring on the board.

The dot is usually red and is called the bull's eye, the ring around (usually green) is called the bull. For hitting the bull you are allotted twenty five points, for hitting the bull's eye you receive fifty.

There are other versions of darts as well; they usually follow the general guidelines of the game with variant scoring. For example a game called fives that is played in east London pubs, is like the aforementioned game except all the numbers in multiples of fives.

Then there is also cricket darts, though no one really plays this game anymore it is still fun to hear about. The board is set up like square and can be played between two to four players.

The square is sectioned into smaller squares with six in the center hold a number and two on the sides. The object of the game is to hit all the numbers and the bull's eye three times.
