When you think of Porsche, what comes to mind? Power? Yes. Speed? Yes. Fuel Efficiency? Probably not. But forget what you think you know about Porsche! They are now a 21st century brand and are going to be releasing 21st century vehicles. The worlds preeminent sports car brand is ready to dive into the world of green driving and theyre doing so in a big way thanks to the 2012 Porsche Panamera S hybrid.
For you Porsche enthusiasts out there who may be worried that a hybrid could take away from the brands essence, Im here to say you have nothing to worry about. The local Greenwich Porsche dealership has assured me that the brand is staying true to its roots, while still adapting to the changing face of driving.
This all-new hybrid has been making its way around the major auto shows, first in New York and then in Geneva. While the Panamera S hybrid wont arrive in the Greenwich Porsche dealership showroom until later this year, its already making waves in these outlets by giving Porsche enthusiasts a taste of what we have to look forward to from the 21st century Porsche.
There is a lot to love about the Darien Porsche Panamera S hybrid. Although it looks like the gas powered Panamera S, there are several key differences under the hood. Its powered by a twin-supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to a 47-horsepower electric motor which earns 221 pound-feet of torque.
Working alongside the engine and motor is a 288-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery pack. This power source is stashed behind the rear axle and under the rear cargo area. As a result, storage capacity is reduced by around 4 cubic-feet. The battery pack with all necessary safety and cooling gear weighs in at roughly 158 pounds.
Though its a hybrid, it still produces Porsche-like figures. Thanks to its Porsche platform, it can reach top speeds of nearly 168 miles per hour, making it the fastest production hybrid vehicle in the world! It is also the most fuel efficient vehicle in the Porsche line-up. According to EPA estimates, the luxury sedan earns 22 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway. These are quite an improvement over the regular Panamera Ss figures of 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.
Not only is the Panamera S hybrid more fuel efficient, but it also offers even more standard equipment than regular V8-powered Panamera S. Features on this list include Porsche's Adaptive Air Suspension and Porsche's PASM shock absorber system that adjusts damping rates to match varying road conditions and driving styles. Additional standard features include Bi-Xenon headlights, Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with Navigation, variable-assist power steering, and a rear windshield wiper.
For drivers who have the money to spend on a fuel efficient sports sedan, the Darien Porsche Panamera S hybrid is the ultimate choice. You wont even have to worry about sacrificing the Porsche experience, which is of utmost importance to Porsche enthusiasts like myself!
