Dangers Of Fluoride In Our Water: Fact Or Fiction?

Dangers Of Fluoride In Our Water: Fact Or Fiction?

By:

The debate rages on and half of the population is not even aware that there is one. If you want to know more about the debate and the issues on both sides read on. My niece Sally L. wrote an interesting piece on the fluoridation of our waterways and said I could include it here. Sally is a bit of a "conspiracy theorist," so I take what she says with a grain of salt. Is it true? Is it not? You decide.

Sally writes:

"Fluoride has been added to the drinking water of most of the American cities for almost 60 years now, and most of the people living today think nothing of it. It is just the way it is, and has always been, for them. The first question that comes from so many , 'If it's so bad for us, why hasn't someone said or done something before now?'" Another favorite is,'What evidence is there that it is bad for our health?'

The people on the pro side of the debate love these questions and they site the increased good dental health of the population as proof positive that fluoride is good for us. It can be argued that this same rise in better dental health has been shown to be in other countries as well, and these countries do not force-fluoridate the population. The same sodium fluoride that is used to fluoridate the water is nothing more than a waste by product that stems from aluminum manufacturing. It is also a very common ingredient in poisons designed to kill pest and rodents. It was also a key ingredient in some military nerve gas.

On the con side of the affair it that it has been proven scientifically that the ingestion of fluoride increases an individual's absorption rate for aluminum. This increase is as high as 600%. Knowing this, we wonder why the government has allowed it to go on for so long. True enough, there are some safe guards in place to "manage the risk". For one, the Environmental Protection Agency has a 1 part per million ratio limit on fluoride in the drinking water, and toothpaste companies have to put a warning label on fluoridated tooth paste similar to the one on medicines such as aspirin, saying that 'if ingested in large quantities' it can kill you.

The larger picture ahas to do with the damage that the continuous ingestion of fluoride has on the organs and the bones in the human body. Recently the fight against fluoride has gotten some supporters in the government and the scientific community. In 2005 the CDC cited cases where 1 out of every children who drank fluoridated water had enamel flouorisis, which is an effect that is irreversible. The ADA warned mothers in 2007 to be wary of mixing formula using tap water. It was clearly stated that this was so that the child would not ingest any fluoride in their first 12 months. Even the Kidney Foundation has sited cases that are exacerbated by the ingestion of fluoride."

What's the truth? I have no idea. I think it all sounds a bit excessive and extreme. You can say just about anything with statistics, and chemistry. Don't even get me started on the dangers facing out population on DiHydro-Oxygen contamination of our waterways. But that's for another debate. Thanks Sally.
