The marketplace is rife these days with SEO "gurus" talking about how to build and design websites that rank on the first page of google. It has certainly never been more important to get your online marketing plan dialed in. At the end of the day though, the proof truly is in the pudding. Only 10 websites will rank on the first page of google for any given search phrase. When it comes to new business development, for many firms it's all about SEO these days.

Search Engine Optimization is defined by Wikipedia as having "the process of "improving the visibility of a website in search engines" via "natural" or unpaid ("organic") search results. All you must do is employ solid SEO strategies as a young business and you may be able to say "goodbye" to cold calls and knocking on doors and "hello" to reaching a mass global market around the clock. Ignore SEO or assign it to anyone less than your absolute best and brightest and you can say "goodbye" to your competition as you eat their dust.

One Dallas-based company appears to have mastered the search engine marketing game for a number of phrases and is truly reaping the profits. McKinney, Texas-based USP&E Companies grew revenues over 300% in 2010 by "solid word of mouth referrals but, mostly, just really good SEO", said Will Gruver, CEO and Founder. USP&E designs, sells, installs and services mission critical power generation equipment for data centers in the USA, gold and iron ore mines in Africa and Australia, utilities in Iraq, and industrial applications worldwide.

But most of their growth has been through getting "good at" getting ranked high on google. USP&E IT Director Brian Davis told us that "SEO is so important that it cannot just be an afterthought - and there are a lot of pretenders out there too, so beware."

USP&E must be doing something right. They are ranked #1 for "Used Diesel Generators" and one of their websites is on the first page of the phrase "Containeized HFO Generators" for 10 of 12 first page listings. That means, Will Gruver's words, "We own that phrase". Any the own several others too.

So, how is it done? How do you own a key word phrase? In order to answer this question, there are thousands of "SEO Consulting" companies springing up from the ground each year. When asked how they do it, Mr. Gruver replied, "There are over 200 variables that google measures in a website, most of which are held secret to prevent webmasters from manipulating their search results by embellishing google's perception of their importance. We focus on the 25-30 that we feel are the most important."

Maybe that is the key to USP&E Global's growth. Most CEO's today are too busy tweeting to actively and integrally participate in the SEO process of building inbound link quality, promoting their brand through social media and optimizing their title tag placement. USP&E and a select few companies that place on the first page of google seem to share a secret that might ruffle the SEO industry's feathers: You can not afford to outsource SEO.
