Dairy Milk Alternatives

By:

More people than ever before have been found to have allergies related to dairy products. Lactose intolerance is caused by a reduction in the amount of the lactase enzyme produced by an individual. Casein , a protein found in dairy, is also a cause of dairy allergies. In all, dairy allergies and Lactose intolerance can be found in nearly 20 percent of the world's population. In some areas of the world, dairy allergies are as high as 90 percent.

The level of dairy needed to start an adverse reaction varies greatly from person to person. For some, even trace amounts are enough to cause an anaphylaxis reaction. This has given rise to an even greater need for dairy free options, both for drinking and cooking. Vegetarians and vegans have a need for milk alternatives as well as more people are choosing to refrain from any substance produced by an animal.

So why not just use soymilk?

Soymilk has been touted as a great dairy free drink for those with milk allergies, but recent studies have shown consuming unfermented soy can have harmful effects on the human body. First, soybeans contain several natural toxins that poison the body. It also contains hemagglutinin, which increases the clotting of red blood cells, preventing them from carrying the proper amount of oxygen to the body.

The most disturbing effect on the body is caused by the elevated levels of goitrogens found in soybeans. These goitrogens affect the thyroid, wreaking havoc on the hormone levels found in the body. Lastly, soybeans are processed in a way that adds toxic levels of aluminum and manganese to the final product. Fortunately, there are several safe milk alternatives for those who are looking to replace dairy products in their diets. Almond, coconut, hemp, and rice milks are widely available, at both health food markets and regular grocery stores.

Plain, flavored, organic and non-GMO options are available for nearly all types of dairy free milks. Most products are available both in standard packaging that needs constant refrigeration and in aseptic packaging that has a shelf life up to one year. Although lower in fat than traditional milk, many of these products naturally contain higher amounts of calcium and other essential nutrients not found in milk. Dairy free milks can also be fortified to eliminate any naturally occurring deficiencies. Milk alternatives can be used as a substitute in any recipe that calls for milk.

They can be used to make kefir, yoghurts, puddings, and frozen treats. The general sweetness of rice and coconut milk make them a welcome addition to baked goods and quick breads. Specialty drinks, such as iced coffees, smoothies and cocktails, are easy to make with dairy free milks. Children easily adapt to the taste of alternative milks, especially those that have natural sweeteners added to them.
