...and many people feel that it is largely an invention to make money for the greetings card industry. According to greetings card makers Hallmark, Fathers Day is the fifth-largest card-sending holiday(1). But generally speaking dads themselves dont place as much importance on celebrating Fathers Day as mums do on acknowledging Mothers Day.
Fathers Day may still take second place to Mothers Day but this Sunday might provide a good excuse to show your partner that you appreciate him - as a partner and as a father.
Todays dads are much more involved with family life and there has been a boom in the number of dads working flexibly. Between 2001 and 2005 the number of new dads on flexible time leapt from 11 per cent to 31 per cent. Dads spend more time with their children than they did in the recent past. Dads also want to spend more time being with their children and supporting their partner. According to a study, 82 per cent of full-time working men said they want to, compared with 70 per cent in 1989(2).
Did you know ...
Young children who have time alone just with their dad show richer social skills and are more confident in exploring the world around them.
One of the most important roles that a dad plays is during the toddler years, helping the child become more secure and not completely dependent on just mum.
Teenagers whose dads actively participate in their lives are less likely to get involved with crime or take drugs.
Even when dads do not live in the same house as their children those with dads who are actively involved in their lives tend to have fewer behavioral problems.
Children with involved, responsive dads are much more successful academically, and are more likely to go on to university.
Findings summarized by Dr. Kyle D. Pruett in his book Fatherneed: Why Father Care Is As Essential As Mother Care for Your Child (2001, Broadway Books),
Stepdads matter too
The title "Stepfather" comes from the time when a man "stepped" into the role of dad following the death of the biological father. More often now it is a relationship breakdown that has opened up the space for a stepdad in a childs life.
Stepfamilies are one of the fastest growing family forms in the UK in 2005 10% of families with dependent children were stepfamilies.
But Fathers Day can trigger some tricky and sensitive issues for stepfamilies your children may celebrate Fathers Day with their biological father who lives apart from them but you might also want to acknowledge a partner who has taken on much of the day to day parenting role.
If your partner is not the biological father of your children try and take the time to acknowledge what a great job he is doing - being a good dad might come naturally but being a good stepdad takes something quite special...
