Cyclist Wakes, But Recovery Is Limited

By:

Ibrahim Ibe Myers has come a very long way since he was hit by a car while on his bicycle in June 2011, leaving him with severe brain injuries, reports the Winston-Salem Journal. He is able to sign a few sign language symbols to his mother. He opens his eyes. He can rub his nose with one hand. But, as the Journal reports, he is only able to accomplish these things sometimes as he spends his day in a bed at a rehabilitation center in northern Winston-Salem.

In June, Ibe (pronounced Eeb) was hit by a car in downtown Winston-Salem in an accident that his family believed he would never wake from. According to Ibes brother Michael, there were not any signs in June that Ibe was going to pull through. The family thought that he would never wake up. Michael visits his brother every Sunday that he is not working. Sitting next to Ibes bed, Michael rubs Ibes legs and shares stories with him about his work downtown and about the baby that is on the way that will make Ibe an uncle. Michael says that whenever he squeezes his brothers hand, Ibe will mimic the movement and squeeze back.

Ibes best friend, David Wainer also visits regularly, claiming, I know that if I was in that situation, he would do the same for me. Wainer was one of the last people to speak with Ibe before the car accident. They had been training to ride their bicycles through the five boroughs of New York, but Ibes accident put an end to that.

Anyone who drives a car knows to watch out for pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians and cyclists know to be alert when near a car. Yet, unfortunately, car accident upon car accident involving pedestrians and cyclists continue to happen. Often it is the case that if a car driver is asked about safety near a cyclist or pedestrian they know the right procedures, but when driving they do not follow them. Many car drivers get impatient at having deal with a cyclist traveling in front of them or having to wait for a pedestrian to cross the road, leading them to try to make their way unsafely around pedestrians or cyclists.

Ibe Myerss life will never be what it was before the accident, and he has a long road of recovery before him. If you have a friend or loved one who has suffered injuries in an accident involving a car, you know what it is to have to watch them try to recover from painful and difficult injuries. Injury attorneys cannot change what happened in an accident, but they can help to make sure that victims get the care and the compensation that they need and deserve. Contact a car accident attorney in the Winston-Salem area to make sure that the rights of your loved one are protected and that justice is served.
