Cute Teddy Bear

By:

Is there really any such thing as a teddy bear that's not cute? It's true that every one of them is different in their own unique way; they all have individual faces, different colored bodies, and come in a number of sizes. Cute and teddy bear go together like peanut butter and jelly or milk and cookies.

Cute teddy bears have been around since 1902 when they were first invented in Germany by Richard Steiff. Interestingly enough, while he was the one that created the teddy bear, it actually got its name from someone that lived a continent away. In the United States, the link was created between the bear toy and Theodore Roosevelt, a hunting-loving president, and the term 'teddy bear' was coined. As for the term cute teddy bears, it goes without saying that that moniker stuck from the day they were 'born.'.

The Steiff German bear was originally called Br 55 PB and to be called the name that he's known as today the world over, he would need the services of the 26th president of the United States: Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt was known as Teddy to his friends and was a big-game hunter when he was a young man. That pastime continued well into his presidency, when in November 1902, his hosts in Mississippi, embarrassed, that in the four days the president had been hunting in their state and hadn't found a bear, tied up an elderly bear for him to shoot. Roosevelt felt sorry for the bear and wanted no part of it. The press was in attendance for the entire event and as a result, a cartoon was published in the Washington Post depicting Roosevelt, hand raised, and the terrified bear. Despite the rather famous incident, no one is quite certain who first applied the teddy bear name to the soft toy, although there are those who claim to have done so.

Morris Mitchom, a Russian migr, and his wife Rose, ran a stationary and novelty store in New York. They saw the cartoon, so the story goes, decided to harness the publicity it caused by making a stuffed toy bear and placed him in the window beside a card that read 'Teddy's Bear.' He sold almost immediately as did every other one Rose made to replace him.

No matter how teddy got his name, it still doesn't negate the fact that teddy bears are cute. If teddy bears weren't cute, why does it take so long to choose one from the dozens and dozens that are displayed on shelves all over the globe? Cute teddy bears are extremely difficult to resist and choosing just one cute teddy bear may seem difficult.

Cute teddy bears are about falling in love more than acquiring a status symbol. The recognition of the One and Only comes when seeing a row of cute teddy bears sitting in a toyshop that may be all one size and all one price. Yet, it's so simple to distinguish one cute teddy bear from the next. Some look happy, some look sad. Some look standoffish, and some look lovable. And one over there (or maybe two or three), has a specially endearing expression. When all is said and done: a cute teddy bear is the one that gets a new loving home.
