Cut Your Home Water Usage

By:

There are many different ways in which you can upgrade your plumbing system to use less water. Saving water is not only good for the environment, but it's also good for your pocketbook. Water is becoming a scarcer resource and municipalities are charging more for water usage accordingly. Here are a few upgrades you can make to your home to help you save more water.

Low Flow Toilets

Although there have been mixed reviews of the new, standard low flush toilets, you can generally save water by installing these in your home. The new toilets use roughly half of the water per flush that old toilets do. Some people argue that the low flow toilets do not actually save water because they require multiple flushes to perform their job.

Toilets with Dual Flush Technology

These are the newest line of toilets which allow the user to decide how much water is needed to dispose of waste products. These toilets include buttons which put the user in control. This helps negate the problems people have had with the low flow toilets that need to be flushed multiple times. They still allow water to not be wasted when it is not needed.

Tankless Water Heaters

These amazing little devices save you not only water, but space as well. The tankless water heaters work by heating water at very high temperatures so that you have hot water on demand. However, they remove the need for a large amount of water, held in the standard water heater tank, to be available at all times. Tankless water heaters require a separate high voltage outlet to be installed for them to work properly. The tankless water heaters are a large initial investment, but will pay for themselves in three to five years, depending on your personal water usage.

Low Flow Showerheads

One of the best ways to conserve water when it comes to showering is to take a shorter shower, but if you find that it's impossible to get your kids out of the shower in a reasonable amount of time, you can save water by installing a low flow showerhead in their bathroom. Not everyone loves the low flow showerhead because they cut down on the water pressure in the shower, but after a while, you'll become accustomed to the lower pressure.

As you can see, there are several ways in which you can reduce water usage in your home for both monetary and environmental reasons. You can find ways to cut your usage through changing your habits, or you can save water through changing your fixtures. Either way that you choose to conserve, you'll be doing a favor for the environment and society as it becomes harder and harder to locate clean water.

It is also worth noting that some of these upgrades are eligible for federal government rebates for energy efficient upgrades. This means that even though some of them require large initial purchases, they can pay for themselves quicker than you think.
