Commuting to London can be a draining experience, battling with trains and tubes at the busiest times of the day. Suffolk is renowned for stunning countryside and quiet coastlines as well as a wealth of culture and heritage. Aldeburgh is situated along the coast, and holds an annual festival full of music, arts and crafts. The small town itself has a plethora of galleries and craft shops for the visitor to explore, and offers a relaxing atmosphere all year round. The quaint charm has been captured many times in films, with the Tudor style buildings being perfect for period dramas as well as people with an interest in historical buildings.

Further up the coast is Southwold, a haven that is home to one of the country's most reputable ale breweries, Adams Ales. Southwold was traditionally a small fishing community, and in some respect this industry still thrives, but catering more for visitors that come to taste the local cuisine. Nothing beats sitting at one of the oldest pubs in the village tucking into freshly fried fish with homemade chips and tartar sauce.

If you prefer the idea of an inland leisure break, Suffolk has many old market towns brimming with local intrigue that are well worth a visit. In fact, the region is well known for having working mills. A visit to the village of Thaxted is a real delight with its ancient buildings, and working windmill. Set in the area also known as Constable Country after the painter John Constable depicted the delicate countryside hues in oils, you can soak up a quintessentially English atmosphere, painting a masterpiece in your own mind that will be a welcome vision the next time you're on the 7.28 to London Liverpool Street.
