The tubes in this design filters water through compartments or inlets called plenum inside the pipe sheets. Water filters into the inlet plenum, goes through the whole length of the U shaped tube and exits the heat exchanger by means of another plenum.

Straight-Tube Heat Exchanger

This one filters water through a straight tube. There are a couple of separate sheets of tubes that make up the end of this straight pipe. Just like a U tube design, a straight tube heat exchanger design also has a couple of plenum for entry and exit. But with the straight tube design, both plenums are found on the same side of the machine.
