Curtain Shopping Advice

By:

Curtains can be a very tricky thing to buy as there are so many different styles, colours, patterns, materials, sizes and priced curtains on the market. If you are looking to buy some new curtains for a sitting room or bedroom in your house then here are some tips and advice on how to approach shopping for curtains.

The first thing is deciding where the curtains are to go this should be obvious for an existing room as they will go across the window. But for a new development you may not know the exact plans for each room; the best advice is to wait until the room has been built so you know for sure where the curtains are going to be hung.

You should then measure the area the curtains are to go in. This includes the height and width you need this so that you know how many metres of fabric to purchase and the size of the curtain fixtures you need, such as the rod. If you head to a curtain shop with these measurements they should be able to help you choose the right fixings and length of material. If you want the material to wave slightly rather than hang straight then youll need to buy material longer than your measurements so that it has the ability to hang loosely.

After this you need to decide on the colour, material and pattern of the curtains. You may want red cotton curtains or green patterned curtains but knowing this before hitting the shops is crucial. Make sure the curtains will fit in with the colour scheme of the room; if your room is blue then get a different tone of blue for the curtains or a colour that goes well with blue such as cream. The material of the curtains should be suitable to the room they are to be hung in. If they are in a cosy winter lounge then thick, draping curtains will work well. If they are in a sunny dining room covering French glass doors then you should invest in some thin curtains that are made from linen, or a red cotton curtain material. The pattern should also be complimentary. If the room is wacky and fun then choose a crazy pattern such as zigzags or checks. If the room is formal or for relaxation purposes then choose a pattern that is plain or serene.

Overall pick curtains that you like and that will fit in well with the room!
