Current Trends In Lighting For 2010/11

By:

Current trends can be broken down into four different categories, Gentle Ease, Contemporary Classic, Creative Verve and Advanced Purism. These trends influence both the world of interior design and lighting, as one must compliment the other. They are reflections of lifestyle choices and have evolved as a result of society undergoing a major change, people are increasingly focusing on what is important.

Gentle ease is simple, unaffected, personal and in harmony with itself and time. Natural and simple, calm and relaxed. The lighting used to reflect this trend is indirect, diffused with colour effects.

Contemporary Classic is timeless, modern, superior and stylish with a feel for the enduring beauty of a living space. The quality and finishes are first class. Lighting needs to reflect this look and should be warm and sensual mood lighting.

Creative Verve is where anything goes, improvisation and individuality are developed to the full and creative lighting design really comes into its own. This look is young and fresh and colour plays a vital part in this lighting theme with the use of colour changing.

Advanced Purism is high design using ultra modern materials. There is a futuristic architectural feel to this trend and the lighting needed to reflect this mood is modern, glossy, clean lined and high design.

The Scandinavian clean lined glass look is very popular at the moment. This look fits in well with a range of interiors allowing you to change your colour scheme more regularly if you wish. As there is a demand for more impressive centre pieces for lower ceilings designers are catering for this by designing their fittings in such a way that they can be converted to semi flush or close to ceiling so that you can still have a light fitting with an air of elegance and makes a statement.

Other popular trends are LEDs which are being used in a number of different applications such as in patio decking, stairs and for effect in bathroooms. With regard to bathroom lighting people are looking for more glamorous lighting than is generally available. In England and the UK we are resticted by strict regulations which means that designers have to be more inventive to design a fitting that meets the requirements and is also attractive to look at but also within a manufacturing budget.

Thankfully gone are the days when most light in a house came from an ugly fluorescent that was put up the length of the ceiling giving a flickering light and sound effect before it came on. Roll on beautiful lighting!
