Cures For Panic Attacks - From Coping To Cures

By:

Can there be a cure for panic attack? One must first decide what coping with panic attacks means. Coping can be great or small, substantial or masking.

I. Coping and curing panic attacks

It is no small victory, for example, to be able to cope with panic attacks. One has learned that they are not heart attacks, not a sign of approaching death. One has accepted that when they come they will pass, however much one may also not want them ever to return.

Perhaps one also uses pills from a doctor or some calming herbs, perhaps right before an attack. Or one focuses on deep, slowed breathing so as to avoid making the heightened anxiety worse. or whatever.

For many, coping is enough to get on with life. Or at least nothing else has come along that is better. Or some methods are too scary or too much work or too expensive to try.

Of course there is a degree of "coping" with fear even among normal people who have never had a panic attack and never will. So in part the search for and application of cures for panic attacks becomes one of motivation.

II. Motivation, learning, and advantage

If curing panic attacks were as easy as pushing a button, there would not be any need to discuss them or read this article. So they are an actual challenge. But what if they could be overcome given a little learning, material advantages, and adequate motivation?

There are those who have overcome panic attacks to the extent that they have become normal. So what is the difference between those who suffer from panic attacks and those who are subsequently cured of them? Granted, some have more trials and troubles than others. And some have more advantages in the battle than others.

One may then ask oneself if any have cured themselves of panic attack despite having more difficulties and fewer advantages than oneself. If the question cannot be answered, at least it implies that a cure for oneself may be possible if one has learned the right things and has sufficient material advantages and motivation.

Cures for panic also depend on the causes of panic. There are rare or unique causes. One person was cured only by magnesium supplementation. Others may need to make changes to relationships or physical circumstances, a not-uncommon need. But there are also methods and means that have proven commonly effective.

III. Some common cures

Among these, one is a feeling of gratitude. The panic attack sufferer may need to be more deliberate about this than the average person, including regular exercise of gratitude, but it will pay off in short-circuiting anxiety.

To benefit the anxious or panicky person, one must have a definite feeling of gratitude. This need not take long in any given occasion, but it should be genuine, not unthinking or casual. Meditate at least briefly on the object of gratitude, perhaps for a couple of minutes or more.

Another technique is to challenge false assumptions. For example, if one assumes one is vulnerable when that is unreasonable, identifying the assumption for what it is can be of help. Or if one assumes one cannot get along with the loss of a person or thing, coming to accept that as a false assumption empowers one against anxiety.

In fact, one can empower oneself when challenging to do its worst the very thing that makes one afraid. This does not mean one throws oneself in harm's way, but it does mean facing fears head on in the mind rather than avoiding them. This need not be accomplished alone. One can do it in a controlled environment with a professional therapist. Or one can face one's fears incrementally by breaking them down into small steps or series of brief progressive battles. This is where self-discipline and encouragement from another person may be necessary.

Aids to facing fears and otherwise overcoming panic may come in various forms, such as lifestyle issues - physical exercise, job choice, sleeping habits, diet, friendship choices, relationships, hobbies, and so on. And more techniques are known.

Build your arsenal for the battle against fear. Keep learning and trying until you are cured of panic attacks.
