Cure Office Stress With Old Time Radio Shows

By:

There's an old time radio show, which was broadcast from the mid 1940s through to the mid 1950s. Each episode opened with these four sentences, or something very much along these lines:

"Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you... Escape!"

Anyone suffering from stress, especially work-based stress, will be able to relate to this situation I am absolutely certain.

Not many people who are reading this will have gone into work every day without wishing they were somewhere else. Yes, for many of us, we don't have such negative thoughts each day of the week, but it's just not possible to say that we never have them.

Plenty of techniques can be used to lower this kind of work related stress and frustration including such things as putting in place a health regime, improving our diet, meditation, and possibly even a form of counseling or therapy, but a few months ago I uncovered a rather different technique which was a huge success not only for one person, but for the whole office in which they worked.

Amazingly the story I'm about to share involves old time radio shows that were originally broadcast way back in the first half of last century.

Carol (not her real name as I promised to keep that a secret) was working extra long days in her job as a tax accountant. It was the start of a new year and everything was getting particularly fraught around the office.

People began to notice that when Carol came back from her dinner break she was like a completely different person. Eventually, a colleague decided to ask Carol what she was doing differently. Was it some kind of Far Eastern meditation? Was she indulging in dubious substances that were not exactly legal.

When Carol told them they were stunned.

Basically, Carol was going out for a 30 minute walk every day. To stop her mind mulling over work problems she was enjoying old radio shows on her iPod. Each old time show lasted approximately thirty minutes and so her walk, and the old radio shows, were roughly the same length.

The technique she was using was doing 3 things.

1. It was, for a short while, making sure she thought about something other than work.

2. It was making sure that at least once a day she was having a good stretch.

3. It was getting her heart pumping.

For someone working in an active, and frequently stressful office, these three things were crucial.

Over the next few months other people who were in the same office followed the same 3 techniques as she had, and the atmosphere in the office was transformed beyond all recognition, and the overall productivity saw quite an uplift.

Amazingly, all of this stemmed from Carol's love of 30 minute old-time radio shows.
