The Lake District National Park is one of the most popular National Parks in England. Having such mountainous terrain coupled with Lakes, this National Park is quite different to the other National Parks in England.

Having the highest point in England, Scafell Pike, at 3210 feet above sea level, Cumbria attracts walkers, climbers and general visitors all year round.

The M6 motorway serves the south of Cumbria right up to the northernmost tip making Cumbria, the Lake District very accessible. The M6 toll road at Birmingham has speeded up the journey further for those travelling from the south cutting out the traffic trap of Birmingham. From Glasgow and Edinburgh, the journey is also quick and painless with the new stretch of the M74 motorway which was opened last year.

The qualities of the Lake District for family holidays are being recognised more and more. The Lake District has a tremendous range of activities on offer. What is quite unique about the Lake District is that a very cheap holiday can be had due to the endless walking routes on offer that are completely free. Thousands of tourists come each year purely to walk some of the most famous mountains in the UK. With lakes, mountains and miles of countryside, the Lake District is an excellent destination for the more adventurous family with activities such as Go Ape, diving, Via Ferrata, climbing, biking, abseiling and kayaking.

The many quality self catering properties available in the area are ideally suited to families. They have all the space required for the children to play, space for the parents to get away from it all and room to store equipment such as bikes and climbing equipment. A Cumbria self catering holiday allows complete freedom to come and go when you please, to stay in an often luxury house and get the most out of the amazing area and scenery. Many properties have been adapted for complete safety of small children.

Of course, Cumbria cottages are not just for families. Cottages can be a great holiday for a group of friends with some large properties available or for a couple wanting to get away from it all. For walkers a self catering holiday gives the ability to prepare sandwiches for the walk in the kitchen facilities and the space to dry walking gear and boots out on the return.

Cumbria has diverse terrain with the miles of coast running from the south to northwest of the region through to the south and central lakes, pretty villages, rolling hills, tough crags and countryside. The look of each part of the region is quite distinct with the craggy fells of the central lakes, the looming heights of the giant western fells, the rolling fells of the east of the county and the coast.
