Culture As Learned Through High Definition Television

By:

Watching television is sometimes tainted with the idea that it will rot your brain, that you are losing brain cells, or that you could find a better use of your time. While it is obvious that one should not spend every waking moment of their life in front of a digital screen, there is absolutely nothing wrong with spending a small portion of your day enjoying the programs displayed in HD on your home television. In fact, you can learn a lot from the information found on the television including very important cultural differences and similarities.

There are many television programs that can clue you into the culture of another people of the world and you have the opportunity to learn an immense amount of information from the comfort of your own home by connecting to the world through your satellite television. A premier example of a show that hones in on the real people of a nation or of a culture is reality shows, ranging from talk shows to reality game shows to news broadcasts. Real life people speaking like real life people is a key element to understanding how a people interact with one another and of what customs and rituals their culture is comprised.

Linguistic differences are easily noted through televised interactions because the listener hears a focused version of the noise that occurred during the captured scene. The voices of the subjects are clear and free from other distractions, allowing the audience member to focus on the vocabulary and the tones, inflections, and changes in speaking that occur when members of this specific culture are speaking. Watching something like NFL Sunday Ticket may not provide the best example of said speaking, although the announcers can also give a clue as to how Americans speak about the football games that are broadcasted in the United States.

Fantasy television shows are also another great insight into a specific culture because they deal with both realities and cultural fantasies that may differ from those with which you are familiar. Soap operas, childrens cartoons, films, and music videos can all hint at the elements that comprise the myths of a cultural or the fairy tale elements that are rooted in the history of the people. Fictional stories that are broadcasted in high definition are great resources for exploring the minds of the people of a certain culture to understand what is considered strange, mystical, unreal, acceptable, or unacceptable. Fiction is a great method to understand the cultural boundaries of a people, which is an area of culture not physically apparent but one that can be understood in a variety of manners.

Utilizing your time to both relax and expand your mind is a great way to keep you interested in the world in which you live. Instead of just watching sports all the time begin to expand your horizons and ingest some programs from another country or another culture within your own country. Learning about others will open up your eyes to the world of another people and also further open your eyes to your own world.
