Cultural Bias And Sexism In Sports

By:

Joan Eliot, a doctor and marathon runner from San Francisco has written about the thing that she and one of her friend watched her husband running on the lawn in Golden Gate Park a few years ago. An idea suddenly came upon her mind, "perhaps I can have a run". This idea came as a great surprise to her. Later, she recollected: "This is a revolutionary idea. I have never seen if there was a woman running. This entire concept was strange for me".
It is comprehensible that outdated ways and regulations as such make some woman furious. Nina Keswick talked to me that she felt deceived in ignoring enjoying the benefits that running brought about during her stage of growth. Susan Brownmiller indignantly describes the same phenomenon in the book Against Our Will: "we can draw some important lessons from sports, one of which is: victory is a hard, sustained, and serious exercise, a composed and sagacious strategy (including the use of stratagem and deceit), and is a positive thought result of mobilizing all reflecting systems. But women are edified after a long-term, and therefore do not want to know this point, are unwilling to put it into practice as well.
John Terumi and Charles Pecs wrote and compiled a book called Sports and Society which argument is impartial that brilliantly expound: "we should notice that men and women have been able to go in for sports, but we should not neglect that men still have the whip hand in the aspect of sports, therefore there exist inevitable prejudice of men and discrimination for women".
Even if the situation is not good it is by no means hopeless. Though women players constitute only about 5 percent, the number of them is increasing. Bruce Orgel, a clinical psychologist in San Jose State University, recently made some pertinent suggestions at a sports seminar in Seattle. He said that women do not lack of natural ability, but influenced by cultural bias. He said: "people subjectively think what a woman looks like which resulted in a cultural pressure. Please remember this old saying 'Horses sweat, men sweat, women ruddy without sweating.'. So if women are to take part in athletics, it is necessary to a leap forward-a psychological leap. She has to encourage herself in making a new definition of herself to treat herself like a human". Orgel continued if she wants to become an outstanding athlete, she has to go further, "she should be independent, and even roar at his coach 'go screw yourself''"
