Cruising On Two Wheels Are You Really Covered?

Cruising On Two Wheels Are You Really Covered?

Gas prices continue to climb, and a recent report issued by the Pickens Group discussed an economists prediction that gas prices will set record highs during 2012. If this prediction is accurate, those records could begin to appear at the gas pump as early as Easter weekend. In Lubbock and across the country, the cost of gasoline has led more and more drivers to consider the feasibility of taking their motorcycles out of weekday storage and driving them to work for better gas mileage. Certainly, a motorcycle is going to get higher miles per gallon than a car, pickup, or SUV; however, if you decide to take some motorcycle experience from years ago and become a daily rider, you may need to consult with your insurance agent and revisit your policy coverage and limits.

Motorcycle insurance is not an automatic inclusion when you insure your motor vehicles. Motorcycle insurance must be purchased separately, as it involves different terms and limits than what is usually written for other vehicles. Insurance companies need specific details regarding your motorcycle, its current appraised value especially if it is an older bike or a collectors model and your insurance company will need information about your qualifications to ride a motorcycle. Many states require riders to have a motorcycle operators endorsement on their drivers license. They may require you to take an examination with a driving test to demonstrate that you have the competence and knowledge required to operate a motorcycle on the streets. Insurance companies will want to verify that you have this endorsement on your license. Additionally, if youre unable to demonstrate this competency, you may be required to take a class on operating a motorcycle. Your insurance company may require that you wear a helmet, though Texas state law does not require a motorcyclist to wear a helmet in every instance. Much like a seatbelt, however, use of a helmet is intended to reduce the potential for head injuries if you are involved in an accident.

The unfortunate reality is that many drivers are not vigilant enough about watching for motorcycles on the roadway, and Lubbock is no exception. Motorcycle accidents tend to incur significantly more damage, especially to the riders of the motorcycle. If you are going to become a daily rider of a motorcycle, consult with your local insurance agent and discuss exactly what you need to do to make sure your motorcycle insurance is exactly what you expect it to be.
