Broccoli – An Effective Blocker
A group of UK researchers focused recently on whether or not broccoli could play a role in blocking a key stage in the development of Crohn's Disease. According to the researchers, Crohn's Disease could be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors including diet. Studies show that Crohn's Disease is not as prevalent in countries where fibrous fruits and vegetables are staples in the diet. Actually, when Japan started to integrate more of the Western diet into their meals, the incidence of Crohn's Disease increased in the country.
With recent research, the UK group examined a vital point in the development of Crohn's Disease. In the initial stages, the lining of the bowel becomes invaded by bacteria – an E-coli type. The scientists explored how elements in the diet might influence that stage. They used plant soluble fibres from broccoli, plantains, leeks, and apples to test if these foods could alter the path of the E-coli bacteria.
They found that plantain and broccoli reduced the transplanted e-coli between forty-two and eighty-two percent. The apple and leek fibres did not make any noticeable impact. These results were confirmed later by taking tissue samples from patients who were undergoing surgery for conditions related to IBD. It appears that broccoli could act as an effective blocker in the development of Crohn's Disease.
Fiber-rich broccoli has been recognized previously as having the ability to enhance the gastrointestinal tract. Its intense levels of fiber also work to reduce blood cholesterol levels. Of course, broccoli has always been known to have endless health benefits.
Broccoli is high in Vitamin C – an invaluable vitamin that is popular for treating the common cold, preventing cataracts, and helping the body to absorb iron. Eating a vitamin-C rich source, such as broccoli, with an iron-dense food increases the iron absorption in the body. Broccoli has also made headlines in recent years for the healthy benefits of its indole-3-carbinol (believed to help with hormone-related cancers), sulforaphane (thought to increase level of enzymes that block cancer), and beta-carotene (transforming into vitamin A). Broccoli is, simply, the best choice!
