Choose Cantaloupe – Concentrate on Beta-Carotene
Cantaloupe is a great choice for Crohn's Disease and Colitis sufferers. Many people include cantaloupe in their low-residue diet. Often Crohn's Disease and Colitis patients will go on a low-residue diet during flare-ups of their conditions or pre-surgery or post-surgery.
Doctors recommend a low-residue diet during the post-surgery period because there is a chance of an occurring blockage. Keep in mind that a low-residue diet is more restricted than a low-fiber diet. Yet cantaloupe will fit nicely into a low-residue diet.
As well, cantaloupe contains bioflavanols that occur naturally in plant compounds. They are powerful antioxidants which fight inflammation and the production of histamines in our body. Inflammation is the main culprit in causing the painful symptoms (gas, cramps, bloating) of Crohn's/Colitis. Bioflavanols or OPC are found in broccoli and black or green tea, as well as numerous fruits, such as cantaloupes, apricots, and grapes. The OPC in most foods, however, is present in limited quantities.
Cantaloupe is a potassium-rich fruit. Crohn's Disease and Colitis patients should eat foods with plenty of potassium such as cantaloupes, avocados, oranges, pears, and potatoes. Potassium protects the intestine and is believed to reduce the risk of kidney stones.
In addition, cantaloupe is considered an excellent source of Vitamin A. Cantaloupe has concentrated beta-carotene content that is converted by the body into Vitamin A. Eating cantaloupe means that you get both of these beneficial elements at the same time. Researchers are studying the effects of Vitamin A on the treatment of Crohn's Disease and Colitis. Even though cantaloupe has just 56 calories, it contains 103.2% of the daily value for Vitamin A.
In a study of over 50,000 women nurses (aged 45-67), those who consumed the highest dietary amount of vitamin A had a 39% reduced risk of developing cataracts. In another study exploring the connection between diet and cataract surgery, researchers discovered that people who put cantaloupe on their menus had half the risk of needing this intervention. Beta-carotene has also been studied to determine its role in the prevention of cancer and oxygen-based damage to cells. Choose cantaloupe every day and get your daily requirement of beta-carotene.
