Crohn's Disease Cured With Diet Day 160

Take Advantage of Turnips
Turnips (a relative of rutabaga but slightly different) can play a part in the diet of Crohn's Disease and Colitis sufferers. A particular aspect of treatment for these conditions is to restore digestion through diet. One school of thought is to eliminate cereals, legumes, milk, and sugar, and establish digestion slowly with lightly salted vegetables.
Add in well-cooked starchy vegetables, including turnip and sweet potato, as one's appetite shows improvement. Turnips can, however, present challenges for certain individuals. This method is not for everyone.
Actually, many Crohn's Disease and Colitis patients follow a raw food diet. Numerous sufferers have claimed that they eliminated uncomfortable symptoms with a water fast followed by a raw food diet. Yet nobody should embark on a water fast or make a dramatic change to their diet without checking with their doctor.
Turnips can be beneficial to Colitis sufferers because they are an example of soluble fiber. It is believed that soluble fiber is the best dietary aid for preventing colitis as well as relieving its symptoms. Soluble fiber is not found in bran or similar foods.
Soluble fiber is present in foods recognized as starches. Soluble fiber differs, however, from starches. The chemical bonds joining its individual sugar units cannot be digested by enzymes in the human gastrointestinal tract. This type of fiber has no calories and passes intact through the body. Turnips are 'starch' vegetables but they have only one third of the calories of potatoes.
Turnip is allowed on a low-fiber diet. Sometimes a low-fiber diet is prescribed for people with Crohn's Disease and Colitis. This diet may be recommended for post-surgery as well as during flare-ups.
In addition, since turnip is a root vegetable, it contains folic acid. Often Crohn's Disease and Colitis patients have low blood levels of folic acid (vitamin B9 or folate). As well, their medication can interfere with folic acid absorption. 'Turnip tops' are a dark leafy green with plenty of folic acid.
Turnip leaves are a nutritious green such as mustard greens and collard greens. Turnip greens have more nutrition than the root. Its leaves provide vitamins A, B6, C, and E, as well as folic acid, calcium, copper, fiber, and manganese.
