Crocodile Plush & Facts

By:

Crocodile plush are used by the World Wildlife Fund as part of their adoption program of endangered animals, to bring awareness to the plight of species that are at risk of disappearing (due to illegal hunting and habitat loss). The American Crocodile is one such animal that is on the U.S. Federal Endangered Species List. These crocs can be found in the Pacific from western Mexico to Ecuador and the Atlantic from the tip of southern Florida to Guatemala.

Crocodiles have been around for some 200 million years and haven't changed much since that time; that's another reason children are so enthralled with crocs as they are the largest living dinosaur-like animals on the planet today. The largest salt-water crocodile ever recorded was in Queensland, Australia in 1957 and was just over 28 feet in length and weighed a whopping 2,870 pounds!

Crocodiles should in no way ever be mistaken for 'gentle' giants they are vicious, powerful predators that float and lie in wait for hours on end at the water's edge. When an animal leans in to take a drink, the crocodile drops below the surface, inches forward, and then launches itself out of the water to attack; the animal is then dragged beneath the surface and drowned. Despite this, however, or perhaps because of it, children still can't get enough of these formidable creatures. Having crocodile plush as part of their stuffed animal menagerie further pushes a child to learn all they can about these terrifying reptiles.

Alligators and crocodiles are often mistaken for being one in the same, however, they're not; what distinguishes one from the other is the crocs long thin snout, lighter color, and two long teeth that protrude from its lower jaw when its mouth is closed. Buyer beware - be sure and know your crocs from your 'gators when out buying crocodile plush. While your child may not know the difference, they may just surprise you by knowing more than you think they do!

There is no denying that crocodile plush are a wonderful way to teach a child all about these amazing animals. While crocodile plush feed into a child's sense of what is fearful and dangerous, they can't help but be drawn to these very frightening animals.
