Croatia For Rock Climbing Enthusiasts: What To Expect

By:

Why is rock climbing in Croatia becoming so popular? There are several reasons why Croatia is becoming a hot spot for climbing enthusiasts. First, there are the variety of climbing destinations, which offer something for everyone, from the amateur to the experienced climber. Then there is the rock itself. The coastal mountains, where most of Croatia's best climbing sites are, is a special type of soft limestone, called karst, that is great for climbing.

Of course, the added bonus of so many other activities to keep you busy when you are not conquering cliffs is another major draw card, and it is a combination of all of these factors that makes Croatia so popular.

Paklenica: endless options

One of the best known climbing areas in Croatia is Paklenica, and the reason it is so popular is that there are around four hundred different climbing routes, that appeal to different skill levels, to choose from.

The best known, and possibly the most challenging, is Anica kuk, a daunting three hundred and fifty meter high cliff, which offers a challenge that even the most seasoned climber simply cannot ignore! If that is too much for you though, you will find plenty of other climbs that fall within your ability in Paklenica, so it is the best place to start a climbing tour of Croatia.

Beach and forest climbing sites

One of the best things about climbing in Croatia is that there are sites located in some of the most beautiful surrounds in the world. Marjan Forest Park, in Split, offers some great climbing routes, and is surrounded by a beautiful pine forest, with some of the most spectacular views from the top of these climbs!

Then there is Baska, located on Krk Island, where your climb will take you up the cliffs, high above Baska Beach, with an endless view over the Adriatic.

Conveniently located climb sites

One of the best things about a Croatian climbing holiday is that many of the best climbing sites in the country are located close to the big cities, including Zagreb, and Zadar. That means that while you can enjoy the freedom of the climb, you are also close to all the amenities you could possibly want, when you want them.

There are hotels, campsites and many other types of accommodation on offer, so no matter what your preference, whether you like to sleep under the stars, or in a luxury hotel room, you will find something suitable near your climbing site.

Locals and visitors alike flock to the many different climbing routes, cliffs, mountains and faces of Croatia every year, and while it may not be one of the worlds best known climbing destinations, it certainly does offer the visitor a wide range of options. So if you love to climb, make sure you consider Croatia for your next holiday, and venture off the beaten track.
