Critical Illness Insurance Looks Very Complicated, Is It Too Complicated For Me?

By:

When we set out looking for a form of protection insurance such as critical illness insurance, for some of us we can often feel that the products that are on offer are very complex and full of information that is above and beyond our knowledge. Regardless of whether or not we are looking to cover a mortgage, debts or even just to get a lump sum of money in the event of a diagnosis of a critical illness. Insurance can seem complicated but there is always help at hand. Insurance advisors, brokers and even friends and family that have previous or past experience of this sort of situation, can help you out with looking at different types of insurance policies to ensure you get the right policy for your needs.

For the benefit of both the insurance provider and the consumer, an insurance company collates all of their policy terms and conditions and puts them into writing so that they can be read, referred to and viewed at the leisure of a policy holder. The terms and conditions of any critical illness insurance policy are of course going to be very detailed; after all the terms are there to provide a policy holder with an explanation of just exactly what is and what is not covered by the insurance company that they have insured with. It is generally broken down into a few main sections followed by different groups under the main heading. An example of what some policy terms and conditions could be broken down into are:

Main headings of

1.About the type of cover you have chosen.

2.The cover and the benefit amount that you have chosen.

3.A question section about the cover chosen.

Followed under these headings is normally a break down of more detailed information. Generally under the section 1 of the terms and conditions you will find that the insurance provider will break down what the insurance policy is, its aims, how it works, the risk factors and the commitment expected by the policy holder. Under section 2 of the terms you will normally find details of the cover and benefits that you have chose. These can be broken down further into groups of what the provider will base their payments of the policy on, when they will pay the benefits out, how much they will pay out and details of any additional options that you have bought at the time of purchasing the policy. The last section of the terms and conditions are generally information that has not been mentioned such as questions and general other information that has been missed out. As every critical illness insurance provider is different, the way their policy is written and broken down is different; however most providers have a key page within their policy to confirm the page numbers of each section. This then helps both the provider and consumer have a quick reference guide to the pages that they need or want to look at, rather than looking through the whole of the policy documents.

You should also take into consideration that the policy wording or terms and conditions are made up for everyones policy not just on an individual basis. This means that there will only be certain parts of the documents that are applicable to your policy and the sections that you have chosen, along with any additional benefits that you have bought. There will be a confirmation form at the beginning of the policy documents to confirm just what is applicable to the policy you have taken out.

Critical illness insurance can be complicated but with the help and advice from people around you it can be made relatively straight forward and can even be made easier to understand. If you struggle with the meanings etc then it is advisable to seek professional help form an independent financial advisor. These people are trained specifically in this type of area and are there to help people like this out; there is no shame in asking for help. Put into simple terms, the insurance policy you take out is there to benefit your future so it needs to be correct.
