Crete, Eat like a local (& beat the Economic Crisis)
We have all read the guide books and the Sunday papers standard tip of "eat where the locals eat" which is great advice but it can be a little tricky sometimes to know exactly where they eat.

Pick a back street taverna
he bill for the meal for 2 (above) in Kandouni Taverna, Xania, of tzatziki, Greek salad, chicken breast & massive pork chop inc. beer & wine, came to 24 or under 11 each (Diane in Crete kindly did the research....)
Shop like a local ( the lidl has landed)
You're spoilt for choice in Crete, so where should you go to to go to get the very best produce? Crete Street markets are packed with local farmers' offerings - where you can pick up the best plump & juicy tomatoes you will ever taste and the thyme honey is pretty good too!
As if shopping in Crete was not exotic enough, there are now a few Lidl's where it's sensible and easy to stock up on the essentials and save money. They have proved VERY VERY popular with the locals (so is this where they go?)
Once again, all Crete street markets(Laiki), Chania indoor market (Agora) and the supermarkets are listed in the local villa info file.
Scrump like a local (long arms needed)
Well not exactly scrumping, but during April & May and again in Oct there is an abundance of delicious oranges & lemons in Crete and if you travel the back lanes you are sure to pass by some very tempting overhanging branches laden with juicy fruit or failing that you can pick up a few kilos in the markets and wayside orange sellers for peanuts. By the way - the peanuts cost peanuts too, as do the walnuts and olives........ There are also a lot of excellent avocados.
