Creative Writing - Beating Writer's Block

By:

Creative writing as a career may not be fulfilling for some. But for those who have the passion, they do achieve a sense of fulfillment, one way or the other. However, in every creative writer's career, there will always come a time when one will experience writer's block. It is the condition wherein one loses the ability to create new work, mainly due to distraction or running out of inspiration. Now if you happen to experience this yourself, you might want to consider these helpful tips to deal with writer's block.

1. Try some creative writing exercises. You can start with random stimulation - take two or three random words and then put them together. Repeat the same without thinking so hard what words to write and you'll realize later that you had fun combining words that you never thought will come out of your mind. Or you can also use starting phrases instead of random words. Consider examples like I am not or I would like to and see where these will lead you.

2. Creative writing may be an art but think of it more as your bread and butter. Why? Because at the end of the day, it will be the one that will bring food on the table and not your writer's block. So, when you feel stressed and seem to run out of inspiration, just think that you are writing not for fun alone but also for your living.

3. Determine the issues behind your writer's block. Are you experiencing physical, emotional, or financial problem? Do you feel burned out or stressed from writing? Or are you compelled to write more than you usually do? All these you need to address by writing about them or talking to a friend so you will know exactly how to overcome them.

4. Think about your writing space. Is it conducive for writing? Or is it too crowded and uncomfortable for you? If you say yes in answer to these, better find a more comfortable writing space. It does not have to be fancy, but it sure has to be comfortable so there'll be no more excuse for you to put off writing.

5. Remember why you choose creative writing as a career in the first place. If you choose it because you love doing it and that you are happy with it, then that passion and joy will sustain you not only through writer's block but all throughout your career.

Writer's block may be common but it can certainly take the fun out of your writing career. So, be sure to consider these tips for your creative writing success.
